Find a toilet before you need it
Look for toilet signs when entering a station, museum or scenic area. Save 公厕 (public toilet) and 卫生间 (toilet) in your phone so you can show staff or search a map.
In Shanghai, the WeChat mini-program 上海智慧寻厕 shows public-restroom locations and information. You can also search 公厕 in Amap. Follow the on-site signs if the entrance or opening status differs from the map.
Prepare for different layouts
Public toilets may have squat cubicles, seated cubicles or both. Carry a small supply of toilet paper; it is not provided everywhere. Keep belongings in a bag you can manage without placing them on the floor, and follow the disposal signs in the cubicle.
If you need a seated toilet, ask for 坐便器. For an accessible toilet, ask for 无障碍卫生间 and describe any specific equipment or transfer-space requirement. A seated cubicle and an accessible cubicle are different things.
Use water intended for drinking
Do not assume tap water, a washbasin or a mountain stream is suitable to drink. Choose sealed bottled water or a dispenser clearly marked for drinking, and follow local instructions for any refill point.
Hotels and trains may provide hot drinking water. Take care with the temperature, especially when filling a bottle for a child. Keep a drink in your day bag and top up before a long outdoor visit rather than relying on a shop at the next viewpoint.
Pack a small daily kit
Keep tissues, hand-cleaning supplies, drinking water and a weather layer within reach. Add the personal hygiene items, infant supplies or essential medicine your group normally uses. Check the weather for the day’s destination, not just the city where you slept.
Use soap and water for handwashing where available. On an excursion, keep a simple bag for any litter until you reach a suitable bin.
Build comfort into the route
Use a toilet before boarding a long transfer or joining a queue. Ask about a rest stop when arranging a private drive, and identify family or accessible facilities before leaving a visitor center.
At busy sites, a comfortable meal break or short hotel return can be more useful than another attraction. Tell us about walking limits, toilet needs or rest preferences when we discuss the day’s plan.
