China travel essentials

Solo travel in China: arrival, transport and everyday routines

Keep the first arrival simple and leave sightseeing flexible. A usable phone connection, an offline hotel address and a backup payment method let you make your own choices without solving every practical detail after a long flight.

Start here

  1. Save the first hotel’s Chinese name, address and entrance.
  2. Keep a second payment option and essential information offline.
  3. Agree a private check-in routine with someone you trust.

Make the first evening straightforward

Reserve the first night and check how reception handles your arrival time. Choose a direct airport or station transfer, and know where you will go if the flight is delayed. Keep the first meal and walk close to the hotel.

Save the hotel address as text and a screenshot, including its Chinese name. A map pin alone can be difficult to explain if a driver, staff member or passerby cannot see your phone clearly.

Keep a backup for everyday tasks

Set up the mobile data and payment tools you intend to use before departure. After arrival, test a small payment, navigation and a message to your contact while you still have time to resolve a problem.

Keep a bank card or cash backup separate from the main wallet. Prepare account recovery and keep key booking references outside a single app, so losing a phone does not also remove every travel detail.

Use clear pickup and destination details

For a booked ride, compare the vehicle and driver details with the app before getting in. For a street taxi, use an identifiable taxi and keep the receipt. Show the destination in Chinese and check whether it is the hotel, attraction entrance or station you need.

At stations and airports, use the signs, official desks and booking channel for help. Give yourself time to find a ticketed entrance or platform rather than accepting a rushed offer from someone approaching you.

Keep social meetings comfortable

Choose a public place for a first meeting and keep control of the way back to your accommodation. Let a trusted person know your plan when going somewhere unfamiliar, especially for a countryside outing.

Check menu prices and the cost of any activity before accepting an invitation. If a meeting changes to an unexpected venue or purchase, you can leave and use an established transport option.

Use the same small checks each day

Before leaving a seat, taxi, café or security tray, check passport, phone, payment method and bag. Keep documents and valuables in consistent places so you do not have to unpack everything at each stop.

For a longer walk or excursion, know the return transport and finish point. A private driver, interpretation session or local outing can be arranged for one part of your trip without booking a complete journey.

Common questions

Can I request help for just one day?

Yes. Ask about a transfer, private driver, English–Chinese interpretation or local outing for the city and date you need.

Should I share my location publicly?

Keep detailed travel and accommodation information private. Use a trusted contact for check-ins rather than posting live details for everyone to see.
