How to budget for a China trip

Build your budget from the route and the services you want. Count accommodation, intercity travel, local transport, attraction extras and everyday spending separately. A private journey can include different levels of support; the written price should make that scope clear.

Start here

  1. Choose travel dates, group size, route and room needs first.
  2. Separate quoted services from costs you will pay during the trip.
  3. Keep an allowance for changes and personal spending.

Start with the route, not a single daily figure

The same number of days can cost very differently in one city or across several distant destinations. List the bases, nights and transfer days before comparing prices. A night saved by moving hotels may be offset by another long transfer.

Write the budget currency and whether your target is for the whole group or per person. Decide whether international flights belong in that figure. Tell us these choices when asking for a private-trip plan.

Make a simple cost list

Use separate lines for accommodation, flights or trains within China, station and airport transfers, local driving, guiding or language support, attraction visits, meals and personal spending. Note which items are already booked.

  • Accommodation: room type, number of rooms, breakfast and extra beds.
  • Transport: tickets, luggage, pickup points, parking or extra stops where relevant.
  • Visits: entry plus any shuttle, cableway, boat or special exhibition.
  • Everyday spending: food, drinks, mobile data, laundry and small purchases.

Compare the included services

A quoted journey should identify the itinerary, people covered, dates, transport and other arrangements. Check whether a driver, guide or interpreter is included and for which days; these roles provide different kinds of help.

Look for clear inclusions and exclusions, payment arrangements, change and cancellation conditions. Where you have booked something separately, keep the provider and contact details with the itinerary so the responsibilities are easy to follow.

Leave room for payment and change costs

Ask your bank about foreign-exchange and overseas transaction charges. Read any payment-app fee before approving a purchase. Check cancellation terms before paying for a new plan or replacing a ticket.

Keep an allowance for a missed connection, an extra night, an indoor alternative during bad weather or a private transfer when the group is tired. Choose the amount around your own route rather than treating a sample figure as a requirement.

Ask for a plan that fits your priorities

Tell us what you value most: central hotels, fewer hotel changes, more guiding, a private driver, food experiences or time for photography. We can discuss where to spend more and where simpler arrangements would suit your group.

Use the final agreed itinerary and written service details when deciding whether the trip fits your budget. The day-by-day examples on the website are ideas to customize, without a fixed package price.

Common questions

Why is there no single price for a seven-day trip?

The cost depends on the route, dates, rooms, group size and support requested. We work through these details to price your own journey.

Should I keep cash for the whole trip?

Use a combination of suitable payment methods and a cash backup. See our payment guide for setup and everyday use.

A planning example · October 2026

How much spending money should you allow?

For two adults sharing one basic private room, this illustrative independent-travel budget is roughly ¥220–590 per person per day. It is a planning calculation, not a quote or guaranteed price. Use the numbers below to change the estimate for your own dates.

Daily itemExample per personAssumption
Room share¥100–250A ¥200–500 private room shared by two; availability and room type vary.
Meals¥80–150Simple local meals; extra for cafés or special restaurants.
Local transport¥10–40Mainly metro and buses, with limited taxi use.
Attraction allowance¥30–150One paid visit on a sightseeing day; lifts and shuttles may cost extra.
Total¥220–590Per person, per day, based on the assumptions above.

For seven days, the simple total is ¥1,540–4,130 per person if you use seven room-share days as a conservative allowance. It excludes international and intercity transport, insurance, visas if needed, private guides and drivers, shopping, payment fees and unusual activities. A seven-day trip often has six hotel nights, so replace the example with your actual booking.

The hotel assumption is informed by published 2026 Chinese budget-hotel chain averages of approximately ¥193–220 per room, while our wider range allows for differences between properties; read the 2026 cost research and its source details. The food allowance is informed by this July 2026 planning guide; attraction ranges come from this guide checked in September 2026. These are third-party estimates, not our measured prices. Beijing, Shanghai, room choice and holiday dates can materially change the result.

For a private journey

Driver hours, number of travelers, car size, hotels, guides, intercity tickets and requested support all affect the total. We prepare a personal quote showing what is included and what you pay separately. Request a custom proposal ↗
