About this place
Why visit
The three towers form a distinctive composition, but their setting gives the visit depth. The landscape around Chongsheng Temple introduces the relationship between Dali’s religious history and the Cangshan foothills. Allow time to look from different angles rather than taking only the familiar front-facing photograph.
Details worth noticing
- The central tower and smaller pagodas
- Mountain backdrop
- Temple grounds
Before you go
Plan your visit
Decide how far into the Chongsheng Temple grounds the group wants to go. The familiar three-tower view is only part of the wider visitor area. Allow for changes in gradient and rest time.
Check the extent of the visitor area and choose how much of the wider grounds you want to explore. This is a separate stop from simply walking Dali Old Town.
Nearby visits and onward travel
Dali Old Town is a convenient separate continuation. Erhai’s shoreline is extensive, so choose one shore segment for a later outing.
Getting there & around Dali ↗A flexible day idea
A suggested day
Use this day plan as a guide. We can adjust the walking, transport and breaks for your group.
- Start
The pagoda composition
Start with the relationship between the central tower, smaller pagodas and Cangshan backdrop. Move between public viewpoints rather than rushing past the setting.
- Explore
Temple grounds
Explore a manageable part of the temple complex and its courtyards. Choose the amount of uphill walking around the party’s comfort, then pause for lunch.
- Finish
Dali at a gentler pace
Return to Dali Old Town for a short walk and local meal. Leave a longer Erhai shore excursion or Cangshan outing to another day.
