About this place

Why visit

Lijiang’s old town brings together lanes, courtyards and water channels in a landscape shaped by Naxi culture. Larger squares can feel busy, while side lanes reveal a different pace. Treat the neighborhood as somewhere people live and work, with shops and performances only part of the story.

Details worth noticing

  • Channels running beside lanes
  • Courtyard entrances
  • Tiled roofs against the mountains

Before you go

Plan your visit

Choose accommodation and luggage access carefully: a vehicle address may differ from a guesthouse doorway inside the pedestrian lanes. Start gently after arrival and keep residents’ homes distinct from visitor shops.

Check the location of your accommodation relative to pedestrian lanes and luggage access. Ask before photographing residents or entering spaces that are not public.

Nearby visits and onward travel

Black Dragon Pool offers a separate waterside outing. Baisha and Shuhe are different old-town visits, reached with their own transfers.

A flexible day idea

A suggested day

Use this day plan as a guide. We can adjust the walking, transport and breaks for your group.

  1. Start

    A quieter first walk

Explore Dayan’s water channels and smaller public lanes. Notice courtyard entrances and rooflines, asking before photographing residents or entering a non-public space.

  2. Explore

    A cultural pause

Take a seated meal, then focus on the Naxi cultural context or a neighborhood that interests you. Keep time for resting rather than continuous walking on uneven paving.

  3. Finish

    Return at a different pace

Choose an early-evening stroll or a quiet dinner near the accommodation. Busier entertainment streets are optional; another short morning walk gives a different impression.
